INVESTMENT STRATEGY
- Geographical Preference: Virginia as first preference, other states, primarily on East Coast.
- Industry Selection: Basic Industries and Non-Revolutionary Technologies
- Life Stage: Approximately 50% early stage, 25-30% middle and 20-25% later stage/buyout.
- Investment Size: Build a diversified portfolio of 13-15 companies; 10% maximum per holding.
- Lead Investor Role: Reduce investment risk by influencing valuation, negotiating favorable terms and obtaining board seats.
- Active Participation: Active involvement in strategic development of each investment.
INVESTMENT CRITERIA
Investments will be made on a highly selective basis following a comprehensive process of evaluation. In order to qualify for consideration, the prospective portfolio company must be within the parameters of the Fund's investment strategy and possess a significant number of the following characteristics:
- Management team has the integrity, skills, experience and commitment to execute the business plan successfully;
- Well defined market opportunity exists and provides the appropriate growth potential;
- Competitive positioning to better meet customer needs and sustain its advantage;
- Financial projections indicating return potential to achieve the Fund's objective;
- Comprehensive business plan supported by accurate market information has been developed (or will be with the Manager's support) to guide the successful execution of the Fund's strategies;
- Realistic exit option(s) available that can be triggered by the Fund within a 3-7 year period; and
- Management that will be responsive to the Manager's strategic involvement.
The Manager will actively screen investment opportunities that potentially meet the Fund's investment strategy and criteria. Once identified, a formal and thorough due diligence process will be followed to fully evaluate the venture's prospects.
